Case leads Thunderbirds past Express

By Matt Stefano

Since coming over to the Soo Thunderbirds this season, Kingston, Ontario native Nicolas Case has been one of the top point getters in the NOJHL.

Following his first career multi point game (1g 1a 2p) on Saturday night at home vs Powassan, the 1999 birth year forward entered Sunday afternoon’s game in Espanola on a four game point streak.

Following a 5-3 loss to the Powassan Voodoos on Saturday night at the John Rhodes, the Soo Thunderbirds travelled to Espanola on Sunday for an afternoon contest vs the Express, who had a record of 0-4 to start the season.

On Sunday afternoon, it would be Thunderbirds forward Nicolas Case getting his first career two goal game to lead his team to a 3-1 victory over the Espanola Express at the Espanola Regional Recreation Complex.

Richards Landing product Nolan Ford had the other goal for the Soo, which was his first career NOJHL tally.

Tanner Mayne, Alex Acosta, Ryan Mulligan, and Camaryn Baber all had an assist each for the Thunderbirds.

Mackenzie Schopfer’s power play goal from Isaac Tkachuk and Joshua Zlatinszky was the only tally for Espanola.

Brandon Gordon made 38 stops for the Thunderbirds win while Express goaltender Jacob Hutchings gave up 3 goals on 42 shots in the loss.

The Thunderbirds will be back on John Rhodes ice for a rematch against the Espanola Express on Wednesday, September 27th at 7:30 p.m.
