Gordon picks up 50th career win

By Matt Stefano

Saturday night was the 28th game on the Soo Thunderbirds schedule, which marked the halfway point of their 2017-2018 regular season.

With a record of 18 wins, 7 losses and 2 overtime losses, the Thunderbirds went into Blind River on Saturday night, sitting just one point behind the Beavers for first place in the NOJHL’s West Division.

Niagara IceDogs prospect Lucas Theriault recorded his first multi point game in a Thunderbird uniform, scoring a power play goal and adding an assist to help lead the Soo to a 3-1 victory over the Blind River Beavers on Saturday night at the Blind River Community Centre.

Thunderbirds forward Kaidan McDonald also had a multi point night for the Thunderbirds, setting up two goals while defenceman Steven Bellini chipped in with one assist.

Forwards Alex Acosta and Noah Solinger (empty net) had the other for the Thunderbirds.

Dylan McMahon had the lone goal for the Beavers while Caleb Serre and Jordan Kreller picked up the assists.

The win now moves the Thunderbirds into first place in the NOJHL’s West Division, with 40 points.

The Thunderbirds, not to mention, still hold six games in hand.

Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan product Brandon Gordon made 35 saves for his 50th career win, tying Ryan Dube (2005-2009) for most career wins by a Soo Thunderbird goaltender.

Michael Corson gave up 2 goals on 40 shots in the Beavers loss.

The Thunderbirds will be back on John Rhodes ice on Sunday afternoon at 3:00 p.m. against the Espanola Express.
