Thunderbirds drop third straight in Elliot Lake

By Matt Stefano

Heading into Friday night’s game on two-game losing streak, the Soo Thunderbirds were looking to get back on the winning track as they were in Elliot Lake to take on the Wildcats.

The Thunderbirds were minus their second-leading scorer on Friday night as rookie forward Camaryn Baber was recalled by the Saginaw Spirit and suited up for his 8th Ontario Hockey League game against his hometown Soo Greyhounds at the Essar Centre.

Thunderbirds leading scorer Nick Smith was the latest member of the club to celebrate a birthday as he turned 19 years old on Friday.

50% of the Wildcats goals were scored on the power play on Friday night as the Thunderbirds dropped a 4-2 decision to Elliot Lake at Centennial Arena.

Brett Crook led the way offensively for the Wildcats with a power play goal and an assist while Carson Andreoli (power play), Mark Perone and Jacob Kelly (empty net) all had a goal each.

Ryan Burlington, Brett Lannin, William Bucsis, David Elford and Nick Long all had an assist each for the Wildcats.

Niagara IceDogs prospect Lucas Theriault extended his goal streak to two games with his 10th goal of the season at the 18:33 mark of the first period, which cut the Wildcats lead to 2-1 after one.

Tyler Malpass had the other goal for the Thunderbirds while Alex Acosta, Bradon Caruso and Nick Smith all chipped in with one assist each.

Logan Sawka earned first star of the game, making 35 saves for the Wildcats victory while Thunderbirds goaltender Eric Schuch gave up 3 goals on 39 shots in the loss.

With the loss, the Thunderbirds have now dropped three straight games for just the second time this season, but will be back in action on Saturday night in Espanola against the Express.
