Thunderbirds trade their captain

By Matt Stefano

He was our captain last season, our top scorer for the past two seasons, and now he’s on the move.

The Soo Thunderbirds have announced that they have traded 1997 birth year forward Matt Caruso to the GOJHL’s Niagara Falls Canucks in exchange for PDF.

Through 151 career games played with the Thunderbirds, Caruso scored 72 goals and 166 points and also holds the team record for most goals scored in a single playoff season with 14, a record he set back in the 2015 postseason.

Through three seasons played with the Thunderbirds from 2014-2017, the 20 year old helped lead his club to back to back Copeland Cup McNamara Trophies in 2015 & 2016, one Dudley Hewitt Cup title in 2015, and two James Aspin Trophies in 2015 & 2016.

This past season, Caruso was also named the recipient of the NOJHL’s Best Overall Team Player Award, along with being named to the NOJHL’s second all-star team with defenceman and teammate Jake Behse.
