Thunderbirds vs Canadians Game Preview

By Matt Stefano

This afternoon, the Soo Thunderbirds will play their final game of the month of January as they will take on the Rayside Balfour Canadians at 3:00 p.m. at the John Rhodes Community Centre.

The last time these two clubs met was back on Friday, December 8th, when the Thunderbirds defeated the Canadians 3-2 at the John Rhodes Community Centre.

That night, St. Augustine, Florida native Braden Robbins led the way offensively for the Thunderbirds with a goal and an assist while rookie goaltender Eric Schuch made 31 saves for the victory.

The Thunderbirds, who are currently in first place in the West Division with a record of 29 wins, 10 losses, 2 overtime losses and 1 tie, will take on the third place Canadians, who have 26 wins, 12 losses, 2 overtime losses and 1 tie.

The Canadians, not to mention, are entering this afternoon’s contest on a four-game winning streak while the Thunderbirds are looking to rebound after a 5-1 loss to the Blind River Beavers last night at the Blind River Community Centre.

A win by the Thunderbirds this afternoon would give them their 30th win of the season in front of their fans.

BEWARE OF SPECIAL TEAMS

The Rayside Balfour Canadians enter this afternoon’s game with the NOJHL’s best power play (25.3%) and best penalty kill (89.8%).

MILESTONES

This past Friday in a road game against the Elliot Lake Wildcats, Birmingham, Michigan native Spencer Van Tiem scored his first NOJHL goal at the 1:31 mark of the second period, which proved to be the game winner in a 4-3 win over the Elliot Lake Wildcats at Centennial Arena.

Van Tiem, who signed with the Thunderbirds back on January 10th, enters this afternoon’s game with a goal and an assist in six games with the Soo.
