2 for Tassone as Thunderbirds top Eskimos

SAULT STE. MARIE – Nicolas Tassone tallied twice to help pace the Soo Thunderbirds to a 6-3 victory over the Abitibi Eskimos in a Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League matinee Sunday afternoon at the John Rhodes Community Centre.

Each side scored twice in the opening 20 minutes with Joey Miller and Eric Hillock connecting for Sault Ste. Marie while Brendan Locke and Brennan Roy getting goals for Abitibi.

The Thunderbirds went in front for good in the middle session adding a pair of markers five minutes apart to go up 4-2 after 40 minutes.

Tassone picked up his first of the contest at 2:56 while Boris Katchouk potted the eventual game-winner at 7:40.

It stayed that way until the latter stages of the contest as Tassone notched his 23rd of the season with just over two minutes left in regulation.

Tristan Salesse added another for Abitibi with 89 seconds left, but Brett Jeffries iced with an empty netter in the waning moments to round out the scoring.

Jaren Bellini chipped in with two assists for the Soo.

Mario Culina made 21 saves to record the win for the T-Birds while Logan Ferrington made 40 stops in defeat.
