A Night In A Box

By Matt Stefano

We’re not talking penalty minutes in the sin bin, but the box that one member of the Soo Thunderbirds organization had was a different experience.

On Friday night, November 6th, Soo Thunderbirds President Kevin Cain slept in a cardboard box outside of the Sault Ste. Marie Soup Kitchen to help raise money for them.

“I tried to sleep, but it was difficult,” said T-Birds President Kevin Cain after his one night experience sleeping outside in a cardboard box. “I spent most of my evening, into the morning staying up. My box was a few feet too short, so I couldn’t get comfortable.”

“You also feel pretty vulnerable,” continued Cain. “It was a real community feeling. There were prominent business people, students and neighbourhood people.”

“This was a very humbling experience, and I’m grateful to those who supported me,” concluded Cain. “I will do things a little differently next year in the hope that I can actually sleep through the night. I am just happy I could raise some money for the soup kitchen for the great work they do in our community and help raise awareness of homelessness in our community.

The T-Birds president was recently named as Team NOJHL’s assistant director of operations for the Eastern Canada All Star Challenge taking place from November 16th-18th in Cornwall, Ontario.
