A trio of one-goal games highlights NOJHL play Saturday

SUDBURY – A trio of one-goal games highlighted Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League play Saturday as Abitibi edged Elliot Lake 5-4 in overtime, Kirkland Lake scored late during a man advantage to also win 5-4 over Blind River while the Soo Thunderbirds won for an 11th straight time as they slipped past the Sudbury Nickel Barons 3-2.

KIRKLAND LAKE GOLD MINERS 5 BLIND RIVER BEAVERS 4 – A Mathieu Lecompte power play markers with 35 seconds remaining was the difference as Kirkland Lake struck late to defeat Blind River at The Joe.

Newly acquire Samuel Wilbur opened the scoring for the Gold Miners against his former club in the first before Tyler Shanush tied before the first period was out.

Ryan Logan then added a power play effort to put the Beavers up 2-1 after 40 minutes of play.

Three tallies before the midway mark of the final stanza put Kirkland Lake in front with Steven Babin, Lecompte and Austin Rust accounting for the goals.

Battling back Blind River pulled even in the late going courtesy of Tyson MacLeod and Connor Cassavia only to see Lecompte’s extra-man marker win it for the Gold Miners in the final minute.

Marc Audet picked up the victory for Kirkland Lake facing 24 shots while Shaun Gerbinski saw 40 pucks fired his way in a losing cause.

ABITIBI ESKIMOS 5 ELLIOT LAKE BOBCATS 4 (OT) – Zach Innes scored two and a half minutes into overtime to lift Abitibi over Elliot Lake at Jus Jordan Arena.

Aviv Milner gave the Bobcats the lead notching the only goal of the opening period.

Each side tallied twice in the middle stanza with Erik Robichaud supplying both markers for the Eskimos while Brett Wagner countered twice for Elliot Lake.

Robichaud then tied it finishing off a hat-trick early in the third before Brady Clouthier out Abitibi on top with 6:54 to go in regulation.

Not to be out done Wagner forced OT completing a three-goal performance of his own with less than two minutes remaining.

That set the stage for Ines to win it 2:23 into the extra session giving the Eskimos the win.

Ryan Tront dished out four assists to aid Abitibi’s offensive cause while Clouthier had three helpers of his own.

Dustin Coredeiro chipped in by setting up two markers of this own for the Bobcats.

Brody Wagner made 29 saves in picking up the win in net with Alex Bitsakas seeing 31 shots in a losing cause.

SOO THUNDERBIRDS 3 SUDBURY NICKEL BARONS 2 – Victory number 11 in succession for Sault Ste. Marie was achieved when Jaren Bellini added the difference maker with 6:19 to go in the contest.

Owen Headrick connected on the power play to give the Thunderbirds the lead heading into the second stanza.

It was there that Sudbury answered back with tallies from Ryan Punkari and Brody Brunet to go up 2-1.

The visitors did reply late in the session courtesy of a Nathan Hebert effort at 18:17.

It stayed that way until Bellini added the latest game-winning goal for the T-Birds.

Michael Muzyka was pelted with 46 shots in a losing cause for Sudbury with Joel Horodziejczyk having 32 saves to his credit helping the Thunderbirds to come away victorious for an 11th straight time.
