The Soo Thunderbirds have announced on Thursday they have acquired free agent defenceman Khadyn Butterfly from the OJHL’s Markham Royals.
Through 19 games with the Royals this season, Butterfly had 4 goals and 8 points along with 40 penalty minutes.
“Khadyn brings a lot of experience to our back end and will certainly add some offensive skills to the team,” said T-Birds General Manager Jamie Henderson.
The 20 year old Moosenee, Ontario product, who stands 6’2 and 185 lbs, had 16 goals and 48 points for the NOJHL’s Sudbury Cubs/Nickel Barons through 113 games along with 153 penalty minutes from seasons 2011-2015, before going to the OJHL’s Hamilton Red Wings during 2014-2015.
“There will be tremendous competition amongst our group of 7 defencemen for minutes which will benefit our entire team as we begin the second half of our season this weekend,” concluded Henderson.
The former assistant captain of the Sudbury Nickel Barons also suited up for the CJHL prospects game during last season and played a trio of games with the OHL’s Sudbury Wolves during 2013-2014. He was named the NOJHL’s most improved player in 2013-2014.
