A former Soo Thunderbird is on his way to the AHL!

The American Hockey League’s Syracuse Crunch have announced on Saturday that they have signed former Soo Thunderbirds defenceman Owen Headrick to a professional tryout contract.

Headrick, who played with the Soo Thunderbirds from 2013-2015, began playing this season with the University of Prince Edward Island Panthers hockey club, where he led all team defencemen in scoring with 15 points in 18 games.

As a member of the Soo Thunderbirds from 2013-2015, the Garden River, Ontario product tallied 12 goals and set up 32 others in 69 career regular season games.

During his final season with the Thunderbirds in 2014-2015, Headrick also helped the Thunderbirds win the Copeland Cup McNamara Trophy followed by a Dudley Hewitt Cup title.

Former Soo Thunderbird and current Tampa Bay Lightning forward Boris Katchouk spent last season with the American Hockey League’s Syracuse Crunch, where he led all Crunch players in scoring with 34 points in 29 games played.

Katchouk, who is now in his rookie season in the NHL, also played on the Soo Thunderbirds with Owen Headrick during the 2014-2015 season, which was the season they were last crowned Dudley Hewitt Cup champions.
