Jeffries Named Captain

By Matt Stefano

As the Soo Thunderbirds get set to open up the 2015-2016 season tonight at the Essar Centre, the team has named overage forward Brett Jeffries as their team captain.

In 100 career games played, the Cochenour, Ontario native has 31 goals and 33 assists along with 45 penalty minutes.

Through his first two seasons with the T-Birds, he shared back to back Zoltan “Toots” Kovacs Memorial Trophies with graduated player Eric Hillock as the team’s hardest working player of the year.

Last season, the 19 year old was also the recipient of the Mitch Tetreault Memorial Trophy as the NOJHL’s top defensive forward. Jeffries became the first T-Bird to win that award since Jake Wright back in 2010-2011.

“It’s a huge honour to be named captain especially with all the other great leaders on the team,” said Jeffries.” There are some huge shoes to fill from some former captains before, but we have a great group of guys on the team and we are excited to get things going against the Eagles.”

Forward Matt Mitchell and defenceman Brandon Grandinetti will serve as the T-Birds assistant captains for 2015-2016.

OTHER NOTES

The T-Birds have added Mississauga, Ontario native Braydon Cunningham as their third goalie.

Player and staff introductions will take place prior to tonight’s home opener and will be followed by a presentation with the Dudley Hewitt Cup.

Game time is 7:30 p.m. tonight vs the Soo Eagles at the Essar Centre.
