National Day of Honour
SUDBURY – The Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League joins all fellow Canadians from coast-to-coast in honouring and remembering all those valiant members of the Canadian Forces and ancillary personnel that served our country in Afghanistan during Friday’s National Day of Honour.
Canadians are invited to take part in this National Day of Honour across our land to remember all those men and women who served our country in the mission in Afghanistan, which began in 2002, and cost the lives of 158 Canadian soldiers, one diplomat, one journalist and two civilian contractors.
“The NOJHL has a rich tradition of honouring those who have served, during Veteran’s Week and Remembrance Day ceremonies,” offered NOJHL Commissioner Robert Mazzuca.
The National Day of Honour and this worthwhile endeavour of honouring members of the Canadian Forces is supported wholeheartedly by the league,” added Mazzuca.
The Government of Canada has set aside this day to mark the end of our country’s military mission in Afghanistan.
A national ceremony on Parliament Hill in Ottawa will pay tribute to the fallen, the sacrifices of the wounded, and the special burden borne by families.
Canadians are invited to honour the legacy of these heroes with a national moment of silence.
“We at the NOJHL join all Canadians from all areas of this great land to honour and recognize all the men and women who so bravely served our country with such distinction,” said Mazzuca.
“We encourage all of you to pause, remember and thank all our members of the Canadian Forces present as well as the past for their dedicated service, especially those who made the ultimate sacrifice in the cause of freedom.”
