NOJHL announces 3 Stars of the week

SUDBURY – The Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League announced that goaltender Brian Kment of the Soo Thunderbirds along with forward Austin Rust and netminder Jeremy Pominville of the Kirkland Lake Gold Miners have been named the 3 Stars of the week for the period ending April 6.

BRIAN KMENT, (G) SOO THUNDERBIRDS – The rookie netminder continues to roll for the Thunderbirds as he won both of his starts last week for Sault Ste. Marie to remain unbeaten in postseason play while also helping Sault Ste. Marie advance to the league finals.

Kment began by making 34 stops keeping his club in it as they rallied late for a 2-1 overtime triumph over Abitibi in game 3 held in Iroquois Falls this past Wednesday.

One night later the Sault Ste. Marie product made another 27 saves as the Thunderbirds finished off the series with a 5-1 victory over the Eskimos.

In the NOJHL playoffs Kment is a perfect 8-0 and sits second overall among goalkeepers in average and save percentage at 1.74 and .925.

AUSTIN RUST, (F) KIRKLAND LAKE GOLD MINERS – The veteran forward, in his final year of Jr. A hockey, had a pair of two-point nights last week aiding Kirkland Lake’s efforts in completing a four-game sweep of the Espanola Rivermen.

Rust, a native of Algonac, Mich., doles out a couple of third period assists, including setting up the game-winner as the Gold Miners won game 3 vs. the Rivermen by a 3-2 count on April 1.

Then in game 4 he scored the first goal of the game and had a helper on a later marker as Kirkland Lake dumped Espanola 6-2 in the series finale.

In the playoffs Rust sits tied for third in team offensive production with nine points on four tallies and five assists.

JEREMY POMINVILLE, (G) KIRKLAND LAKE GOLD MINERS – Like Kment, Pominville has also yet to taste defeat in the postseason for the Gold Miners going 7-0 so far.

His two latest triumphs came last week as Kirkland Lake handled Espanola in the semifinals and helped send his side to the league championship series vs. Sault Ste. Marie.

In those two victories to close out the series against the Rivermen Pominville kicked out 53 of the 57 shots he saw in backstopping the Gold Miners defensive efforts.

The 20-year-old from Mattice, Ont., tops all goaltenders in both goals-against average and save percentage in the NOJHL playoffs at 1.43 and .943.
