NOJHL announces Eastlink TV 3 Stars of the Week
SUDBURY – The Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League announced Monday that forwards Matt Pinder of the Soo Thunderbirds along with Jason Berube and Cody Gratton of the Cochrane Crunch have been named the Eastlink TV 3 Stars of the week for the period ending March 29.
MATT PINDER, (F) SOO THUNDERBIRDS – As one of the many homegrown players on the Sault Ste. Marie roster, the 19-year-old Pinder has chipped on both ends of the ice helping the Thunderbirds start the playoffs by going unbeaten through six contests to date.
In Game 1 of their West Division final vs. Elliot Lake, he got his club on the board after they fell behind 2-0 early and then added a key insurance marker in a 5-2 triumph Thursday at Essar Centre.
Saturday night he helped set-up the T-Birds opening tally and supplied a later assist as the Soo skated to another 5-2 win in Game 2, which was held Saturday at Centennial Arena in Elliot Lake.
In his first six playoff contests in 2015, Pinder has two goals and seven helpers for the Thunderbirds.
JASON BERUBE, (F) COCHRANE CRUNCH – The veteran forward, who hails from Port Cartier, Que., registered five points over the weekend helping Cochrane grab an early 2-0 series lead in their best-of-seven East Division final vs. Powassan.
Friday evening at the Tim Horton Event Centre, Berube picked up a goal and an assist in a 7-4 decision over the Voodoos.
One night later he tacked on three helpers to help pace the Crunch past Powassan 6-2.
Berube is currently averaging over a point-per-game for Cochrane in the postseason with 10 in eight outings on a pair of tallies and eight assists.
CODY GRATTON, (F) COCHRANE CRUNCH – The 20-year-old Sudbury product began his week by scoring twice and adding an assist as Cochrane took Game 1 of their divisional final against Powassan Friday.
Gratton followed that up by notching another marker and setting up two others as the Crunch skated to a Game 2 victory on home ice over the Voodoos Saturday.
His 13 overall points is just one shy of the NOJHL playoff lead.
