NOJHL announces Eastlink TV 3 Stars of the Week
SUDBURY – The Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League announced Monday that forward Matthew Caruso and defenceman Michael Caruso of the Soo Thunderbirds as well as Timmins Rock goaltender Logan Ferrington have been named the Eastlink TV 3 Stars of the week, for the period ending Dec. 20.
MATTHEW CARUSO, (F) SOO THUNDERBIRDS – The 18-year-old Caruso has been one of the hottest players in the entire NOJHL and produced an 11-point week helping his hometown Sault Ste. Marie side reel off three victories.
The Thunderbirds forward started his efforts by tallying twice, including notching the game-winner, and added an assist in a triumph over Blind River on Wednesday.
Friday night he notched a hat trick, which included a second straight game-winner and set-up, another goal in a shutout win over Iroquois Falls.
Caruso then capped off his solid performance by tacking on two more markers while setting up the deciding effort as part of the pair of assists he had as the Soo stopped Timmins.
He now has goals in five straight outings and points in six consecutive contests for the Thunderbirds and has also taken over the club scoring lead with 39 points in 32 games on 18 tallies and 21 helpers.
MICHAEL CARUSO, (D) SOO THUNDERBIRDS – The older brother among the two Caruso’s on the Thunderbirds in defenceman Michael also had a solid week for the team in their trio of triumphs last week.
The 20-year-old blueliner set-up the winner as part of a three-assist night in the win over Blind River Wednesday.
The elder Caruso was held off the score sheet in the T-Birds next contest, but his solid efforts defensively helped his team register a shutout over Iroquois Falls.
Saturday night he dished out two more assists, including one on the eventual decider as the Soo skated past Timmins.
The points Caruso piled up raised his season total to eight in helping the league-leading Thunderbirds improve their overall record to 29-3-0-0 heading into the holiday break.
LOGAN FERRINGTON, (G) TIMMINS ROCK – As Timmins embarked on a road trip that saw them play three times in a span of less than 48 hours, Rock goaltender Ferrington played every minute helping his side pick up four points in the NOJHL standings.
The 20-year-old London, Ont., product began the road swing with a sensational 55-save performance of the Soo Eagles Friday evening at Pullar Stadium to post his first shutout for the Rock.
Saturday night saw him face 45 shots in a setback to the league-leading Soo Thunderbirds as Essar Centre.
Ferrington then wrapped up his week by stopping 30 of the 31 attempts he handled in a victory over the Blind River Beavers at the Community Centre.
He finished up the three-game trek with a 2.00 goals-against average and a .961 save mark.
Ferrington’s 13 wins on the season tie him for second most in the NOJHL.
With the NOJHL now on its holiday break, the Eastlink Three Stars of the Week will return in January.
