NOJHL announces preseason schedule

SUDBURY – The Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League announced today its preseason schedule for the upcoming campaign.

There are currently a dozen exhibition contests on the NOJHL preseason slate.

Game action will commence on Thursday, Aug. 21 as the Cochrane Crunch host the Mattawa Blackhawks in the first of two 7:30 p.m. starts at the Tim Horton Event Centre in Cochrane.

The two sides will also meet the following evening, Friday, Aug. 22 at 7:30 p.m.

Aug. 22 will also feature the first of a home-and-home set between the defending NOJHL champion Kirkland Lake Gold Miners and the Abitibi Eskimos.

The opener goes at 7:30 p.m. at the Joe Mavrinac Community Complex in Kirkland Lake before shifting to Jus Jordan Arena in Iroquois Falls for the finale on Saturday, Aug. 23 in another 7:30 p.m. start.

Meanwhile two newly minted NOJHL clubs in Cochrane and the Powassan Voodoos will square off in a 2:30 p.m. matinee on Wednesday, Aug. 27 at the Powassan Sportsplex.

The Eskimos and Gold Miners will also compete in another two-game series Aug. 27-28 starting in Iroquois Falls before wrapping up in Kirkland Lake the next night in a pair of 7:30 p.m. puck drops.

Cochrane and Powassan will then compete in a neutral site encounter on Saturday, Aug. 30 in New Liskeard. Puck drop in that one is set for 7:30 p.m.

That same evening the Elliot Lake Wildcats will entertain the Soo Thunderbirds in a 7:30 p.m. start at Centennial Arena.

One day later the Voodoos will conclude preseason play at home on Sunday, Aug. 31 as they host the Blind River Beavers in a 5:30 p.m. start at the Powassan Sportsplex.

Two other exhibition tilts featuring a NOJHL club will see the Soo Thunderbirds taking on the Sault Ste. Marie. Mich.,-based Soo Eagles of the North American Hockey League Sept. 5-6 in a two-game set for the Rollie King Cup at Pullar Stadium.

Game 1 goes at 7:30 p.m. while the finale is set for 7 p.m.
