Parsons and Rebek lead Thunderbirds past Voodoos

By Matt Stefano

After having their home game against Rayside Balfour postponed this past Wednesday due to inclement weather, the Soo Thunderbirds had some more time off heading into this weekend as they opened up a two-game road trip on Saturday night in Powassan to take on the Voodoos.

The Thunderbirds, who entered Saturday night’s game on a three game losing streak, took on the fifth best team in the country who was coming off a 9-3 win over the Soo Eagles on Friday night.

The Voodoos opened the scoring at the 16:05 mark of the first period, as Gregory Trudeau-Paquet notched his seventeenth goal of the season from Seiji Martone and Parker Bowman, which put the home side up 1-0 after one.

The Thunderbirds would then tie the game up at one just 3:38 into the second period, as rookie forward Brock Santa Maria would notch his second goal of the season from Dylan Parsons and Kurtis Rogers.

The tie wouldn’t last long though, as the Voodoos would go up 2-1 at the 4:57 mark of the second, courtesy of Parker Bowman’s team leading twenty third goal of the season from Gregory Trudeau-Paquet and Tomas Yachmenev.

The Thunderbirds would then tie things up at two at the 6:43 mark of the second period, as rookie forward Cooper Smyl would get his seventh goal of the season from Avery Rebek and Dylan Parsons.

Parsons, who drew an assist on Smyl’s goal, also gave himself his first multi point game in a Thunderbird uniform.

The Thunderbirds were not done scoring just yet though, as forward Mackenzie Walkington then notch his seventh of the season at 7:07 from Avery Rebek and Dylan Parsons, which put the Soo up 3-2 after two periods of play.

Parsons assist on Walkington’s second goal of the game, also gave him his third point of the night.

The Thunderbirds would then seal the deal with just two seconds to go in the third period, as second year forward Avery Rebek would notch his eighth goal of the season into an empty net as the Soo would go on to defeat the Voodoos by a score of 4-2 at the Powassan Sportsplex.

Rebek’s empty net goal, also gave him his third point of the night.

Voodoos netminder Owen Say gave up three goals on twenty nine shots in the loss while Thunderbirds goaltender Dakota Meyer made thirty four stops for the victory.

The Thunderbirds, who have now snapped their three-game losing streak against the fifth best in Canada, will be back in action tomorrow night in Chelmsford for a matchup against the Rayside Balfour Canadians.

Puck drop is 6:30 p.m. at Chelmsford Arena.
