Saturday sees T-Birds, Trappers and Eskimos all win
SUDBURY – Three games on the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League schedule Saturday had the Soo Thunderbirds, North Bay Trappers and Abitibi Eskimos all skate to victories.
SOO THUNDERBIRDS 4 ELLIOT LAKE BOBCATS 2 – The Thunderbirds stayed red hot breaking open a close game with three third period tallies en route to the triumph over the Bobcats at Centennial Arena.
Riley Bordin gave Sault Ste. Marie the lead with the only marker of the opening period.
Elliot Lake pulled in the middle stanza with the only goal of the session that came off the stick of Aaron Carmichael at 14:03.
The T-Birds would then break it open in the final frame as Nathan Hebert, Nicolas Tassone and Owen Headrick put the visitors up 4-1 with seven minutes to go.
Dudtin Cordeiro added one late for the Bobcats to round out the scoring.
Joely Miller dished out a pair of assists to aid the offensive cause for the Thunderbirds.
Joel Horodziejczyk turned aside 34 of 36 shots he faced to win his 12th straight start for the Soo who improved to 23-4-0-2 overall.
Etienne Roy saw 44 pucks fired his way in defeat for Elliot Lake who slipped to 13-10-0-3 on the season.
NORTH BAY TRAPPERS 4 BLIND RIVER BEAVERS 1 – Eric Champgne had a pair of goals, including the game-winner to help pace North Bay to the road victory at Blind River.
After the Beavers’ Scott Marshall opened the scoring early in the second period Champagne tallied twice to put the Trappers up 2-1 after 40 minutes.
Chance Thomas and Howard Yawit then provided some insurance in the third to wrap things up.
Ryan Demyen and Anthony Postiglione each added a couple of helpers for North Bay as well.
Evan Cormier secured the win for the Trappers finishing with 37 stops on the night while Dylan Knox suffered the setback after seeing 30 pucks fired his way.
With the triumph North Bay moved to 10-14-0-4 as Blind River fell to 5-23-0-1.
ABITIBI ESKIMOS 7 SUDBURY NICKEL BARONS 2 – Abitibi won for an eighth straight time at Jus Jordan Arena and ninth in succession as the home team in the one-sided win over Sudbury.
Brenden Locke notched a hat-trick for the Eskimos to send them on their way to victory.
Two of his markers came in the opening period while Brady Clouthier added another with Giovanni Foschia potting one for the Nickel Barons to make it 3-1 after the first.
After Ben Miller made it 4-1 in the second stanza, Guillaume Rheault pulled Sudbury closer at 14:27 of the middle session only to see Ryan Kerr, Locke and Clouthier all connect before the second was complete to all but decide the outsome.
Neither side scored in the third in a contest that saw Abitibi hold the edge in the shots on goal department by a 35-28 margin.
Zach Innes, Andrew Green and Landon Hiebert each dished out two assists apiece for the winners.
Brody Wagner went the distance for the Eskimos and picked up the win.
Michael Muzyka started for the Nickel Barons and suffered the loss stopping nine of 12 attempts fired his way in 20 minutes of work while Andrew Lefebvre turned aside 19 of 23 shots in two periods of relief.
Abitibi went to 13-11-0-3 with the triumph while Sudbury dipped to 7-16-0-4.
