Sault Ste. Marie thumps Blind River

BLIND RIVER – The Soo Thunderbirds jumped out to an early lead and did not falter as they thumped the Blind River Beavers 10-1 in a Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League contest Saturday at the Blind River Community Centre.

Sault Ste. Marie erupted for four tallies in an eight-minute span in the opening period starting with a Matt Caruso effort at 7:28.

Nicolas Tassone then made it 2-0 two minutes later before Caruso notched another and Jaren Belini connected on a man advantage to put the Thunderbirds in control early and cause Blind River to make a goaltending change replacing starter Zach Mills in favour of Nick Kazmierczak.

Special teams allowed the visitors to extend their cushion in the second stanza getting power play markers from Nathan Hebert and Anthony Miller to put the T-Birds up by six entering the third.

Blind River would get on the board two minutes into the third when Austin Lamont finished off the work of Andrew Trowbridge and Trent Linklater at 2:01.

Undeterred the Thunderbirds answered right back seconds later when Matthew Mitchell found the back of the net.

They then added three more to finish off the romp, including a pair from Joey Ogden, and a solo effort from Boris Katchouk.

Joey Miller had a big night offensively for the Soo dishing out five assists while Brett Jeffries added three helpers of his own on a night where nine Thunderbirds skaters finished with multiple-point nights.

Shots on goal favoured the winners by a 54-19 count with Brian Kment picking up the victory and Mills the loss.
