The Soo Thunderbirds Junior A hockey club has announced on Friday that 1999 birth year forward Nick Smith has committed to the team for the 2016-2017 season.

“Nick had a tremendous season with the AAA Thunderbirds and he really seemed to play his best in the biggest games,” said T-Birds general manager Jamie Henderson. “We’ve had a chance now to see him play a few games with us as the season came to a close and we were really impressed with his compete level.”

The Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario product, who stands 5’9 and 147 lbs, finished second in Soo Thunderbirds AAA scoring this season with 20 goals and 37 points through 34 games along with 34 penalty minutes.

“Nick will need to get stronger between now and the start of the season,” concluded Henderson. “But we’re excited he has made a commitment to the program and we want to welcome Nick and his family!”

Smith, who finished second in team scoring with the AAA T-Birds during the regular season, scored twice and set up another in two playoff games as he finished tied with Keegan Stevenson for first in team playoff points with 3.

“Honestly it’s a great feeling to know that I am going to a winning organization where hard work and talent are recognized,” said Smith. “That aspect of it makes me bring more to the table and my goal next year is to play for the Soo Thunderbirds. Achieving it just gives me the sense of accomplishment and I’m ready for next season to start.”
