Sudbury hands Soo 1st loss

SAULT STE. MARIE – The surging Sudbury Nickel Barons won for the sixth time in seven outings Saturday as they edged the previous unbeaten Soo Thunderbirds 3-2 in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League play at the John Rhodes Community Centre.

Sudbury took a 1-0 lead after one period of play courtesy of a Dylan Callaghan effort with just 24 seconds left in the opening stanza.

Sault Ste. Marie levelled the proceedings early in the second as Izaak Del Mastro slammed home his first in the Thunderbirds jersey with Nicolas Tassone and Brandon Grandinetti picking up assists.

Lucas Toth put Sudbury back on top at 2:48 of the third only to see Travis Campbell supply an equalizer five minutes later.

Jimmy Roy than notched the difference maker for the Nickel Barons midway through the final frame with the visitors holding on from there to secure the victory and improve to 6-1 on the campaign.

Kevin Labelle was stellar between the pipes for Sudbury making 48 saves on the night in picking up the win.

Mario Culina saw 35 shots put his way for the T-Birds, who fell to 2-1 overall.
