A player from Florida is joining the Bird nest.

The Soo Thunderbirds have announced on Thursday that they have signed free-agent forward and Lake Worth, Florida native Anton Petrovskiy.

Petrovskiy, who is a 2004-birth-year forward, stands 6’0 inches tall and weighs 185 pounds.

“Anton is a really driven young man who has a great passion for the game,” said Soo Thunderbirds assistant coach and general manager Jamie Henderson. “He is a strong skater who works extremely hard and we are going to work with him to really develop his all-around game.”

Petrovskiy, who is the newest member of the Soo Thunderbirds, played in two exhibition games this month with the AJHL’s Battlefords North Stars, where he recorded 1 goal and 2 penalty minutes.

Prior to joining the North Stars, the American-born forward spent the 2021-2022 season with the USPHL’s Columbus Mavericks, where he scored 8 times and set up 13 others in 40 regular season games.

“I am super excited to join the Soo Thunderbirds,” Petrovskiy said. “I just flew into the Sault today (Thursday) and had my first practice with the team, and it was a blast. Everybody is also dialled in and ready to go for Friday’s game against French River.”

With the addition of Petrovskiy, the Soo Thunderbirds now have a total of two American-born players on their 2022-2023 roster.

The other American-born player on this year’s Soo Thunderbirds roster, is Allendale, Michigan native Ryan Blackburn.
