T-Birds Down Eskis

By Matt Stefano

After having their five game winning streak snapped by the Cochrane Crunch on Friday night, the Soo Thunderbirds were looking to get back on the winning side of things in Iroquois Falls on Saturday against the Eskis.

Jaren Bellini notched his third goal of the season from Mark Tassone and Brett Jeffries to put the Soo up 1-0 at 13:15 into the first. T-Birds forward Matt Caruso, who entered tonight’s game with a team leading seven assists, got his first goal of the season at 16:58 from Jaren Bellini and Darian Pilon to put the Soo up 2-0 through twenty minutes.

Thirty eight seconds into the second, Brett Ouderkirk got his fifth of the season from David Osbourne to cut the T-Birds lead to 2-1.

With the T-Birds leading by one after forty minutes, it would be Matt Pinder getting his eighth of the season at 1:53, unassisted, to give the Soo a 3-1 lead. Matt Busby scored into the empty net with just eighteen seconds to go as the T-Birds went on to defeat the Eskis 4-1 at the Jus Jordan Arena.

Brandon Gordon made twenty saves in net for the T-Birds win, while Eskis goalie Josh Horner gave up three goals on seventy one shots.

The T-Birds will be in Timmins on Sunday afternoon to take on the Rock at 2:00 p.m. from the McIntyre Arena.

KATCHOUK IN HOUND TOWN

After scoring his first Ontario Hockey League goal on Friday night against Windsor, former T-Bird and current Soo Greyhounds forward Boris Katchouk scored the game winner for the Hounds in a 3-1 victory over the Niagra IceDogs on Saturday night.

Katchouk was named third star of the game for the second straight night and third time in his Ontario Hockey League career.
