Three-goal third period leads T-Birds to win over Eagles

By Matt Stefano

After trailing the Soo Eagles 2-1 after forty minutes of play, the Soo Thunderbirds came back to score three unanswered goals in the third period as they went on to double up the Soo Eagles by a score of 4-2 at the John Rhodes Community Centre on Wednesday night.

The win also put the T-Birds back on the winning track after they suffered a 6-3 loss to the Cochrane Crunch last Saturday night in the Soo.

With the T-Birds on a power play late in the opening period, it would be Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario native Justin Mauro getting his 2nd goal of the season from Brodie McConnell-Barker with 57 seconds to go in the first, giving the Soo a 1-0 lead after twenty minutes of play.

Mauro, who scored his 2nd goal of the season on Wednesday night, also gave himself his second goal in just his fourth game played with the Soo.

With the T-Birds leading the Eagles 1-0 late in the middle frame, the Eagles would then get a pair of power play markers just 38 seconds apart, which quickly turned a 1-0 T-Birds score into a 2-1 Eagles lead.

First, the Eagles would tie the game on a two-man advantage, thanks to a power play tally by Brian Fiddes from Bryce Grandboise and Jack Paweski at 17:22 of the second, making the score 1-1.

The Eagles would then get another power play tally at the 18:00 mark of the second, courtesy of defenceman Coby Fox’s 2nd goal of the season from Bryce Grandboise and Brian Fiddes, which made the score 2-1 for the Eagles heading into the third.

After giving up back-to-back power play tallies late in the second period, the T-Birds would then respond with a power play goal of their own just 21 ticks into the third, as forward Wyatt Marlow would notch his 7th goal of the season from Justin Mauro, which tied things up at two.

The T-Birds would then take the lead for the second time of the evening almost halfway through the third period, as forward Anton Petrovskiy would notch his 3rd goal of the season from Brodie McConnell-Barker and Austin Fellinger at 9:20, putting the Soo ahead by a score of 3-2.

Then, with just 57 seconds to go in regulation time, it would then be T-Birds leading scorer Dharan Cap getting his 15th goal of the season into an empty net from Michael Chaffay, making the score 4-2 for the Soo Ontario Birds.

Eagles goaltender Logan Raffaele gave up 3 goals on 42 shots in the loss while T-Birds netminder Landon Miller made 35 saves for the victory.

Next action for the T-Birds will be on Friday night at 7:00 p.m., when they will take on the Elliot Lake Red Wings at the John Rhodes.

SAME TIME, DIFFERENT PERIOD

During Wednesday night’s game, the T-Birds got a goal at the 19:03 mark of the first period, and another goal at the 19:03 mark of the third period.

Justin Mauro got the first goal for the T-Birds at the 19:03 mark of the first period, which at that time put his hometown up by a score of 1-0.

Dharan Cap then got an empty net goal for the T-Birds at the 19:03 mark of the third period, which at that time gave the T-Birds a 4-2 lead.

FOX GETS HIS SECOND

On Wednesday night, Soo Eagles second-year defenceman Coby Fox scored his 2nd goal of the season, which set his career-high for most goals scored during a regular season.

In his rookie season with the Soo Eagles last season, Fox had 1 goal through 35 regular season games played.
