Thunderbirds active win streak 2nd longest in CJHL
SUDBURY – The surging Soo Thunderbirds continue to rack up the victories in the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League.
Winners of nine consecutive games, Sault Ste. Marie’s current run has the club sporting the second highest active win streak in the 129-team Canadian Junior Hockey League.
Last season the ever-consistent Thunderbirds had an 11-game as well as a franchise-record 25-game win streak to their credit.
In 2014-15 only the No. 1 rated squad in the CJHL, the Manitoba Junior Hockey League’s Portage Terriers, have a longer winning streak on the go than the T-Birds.
The 2015 RBC Cup Canadian Jr. A Championship host Terriers, have reeled off 14 straight triumphs to begin play in the MJHL this season.
After the Thunderbirds current streak, four CJHL sides have won seven in a row, including the Penticton Vees (BCHL), Spruce Grove Saints (AJHL), Sherbrooke Cougars (QJHL), Aurora Tigers (OJHL) and the Georgetown Raiders. (OJHL)
Rounding out the top 10 in this category are the Woodstock Slammers (MHL), who have skated to six straight wins while the Kindersley Klippers (SJHL) and Nanaimo Clippers (BCHL) have both won their past five outings.
The Thunderbirds will look to run their current win streak to double digits Friday as they visit the 9-3 Elliot Lake Wildcats in a 7:30 p.m. start at Centennial Arena.
