Thunderbirds back in win column with OT triumph over Voodoos

POWASSAN, Ont. – Less than 24 hours after having an eight-game win streak snapped with an overtime loss in Kirkland Lake Saturday, the Soo Thunderbirds returned to the win column Sunday afternoon by edging the Powassan Voodoos 5-4 in extra time in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League play at the Powassan Sportsplex.

Caleb Boman was the OT hero for the Thunderbirds winning it with a power play blast at 3:08 of the extra session.

Each side would score once in the opening frame with Boman connecting for Sault Ste. Marie while the Voodoos’ Tyler Peters tied it at 17:40 with a man advantage effort.

The Thunderbirds took a 3-2 lead after 40 minutes sandwiching markers by Matt Pinder, via the man advantage, and Matthew Mitchell at even strength around one from Powassan’s Eric Champagne.

In the third the Voodoos equalized on a Jake Staples shorthanded effort while Kyle Moore put the home side up 4-3 as he converted on a penalty shot attempt.

The T-Birds forced OT with 4:19 remaining in regulation as Michael Caruso picked up his fourth overall.

In the first extra session Boman won it for the Soo as he collected his second of the day and 12th overall to give his side the extra point.

Matt Caruso had three assists for the Thunderbirds while Matt Busby had two as did Aaron Beauchamp for Powassan.

Connor Ryckman picked up his first NOJHL victory making 22 saves along the way.

Garrett Forrest helped the Voodoos pick-up a point as he was peppered with 60 shots against in defeat.
