Thunderbirds’ Boville blanks Gold Miners

KIRKLAND LAKE, Ont. – Riding the shutout goaltending of Cameron Boville, the Soo Thunderbirds went on to blank the Kirkland Lake Gold Miners 3-0 Sunday afternoon in a Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League contest at Joe Mavrinac Community Complex.

The Thunderbirds’ converted eight minutes into the match-up thanks to Landon Hill’s 11th of the season as he ran a point streak to four by spinning and finishing off the leftovers off a Brayden Gosselin attempt in putting it past Gold Miners’ netminder Glen McInnes, for the eventual game-winner.

Remaining 1-0 Sault Ste. Marie into the second stanza, the evenly played session went without a goal as the efforts of McInnes and Boville kept it 1-0 for the Soo.

Moving to the third period, the Soo struck shorthanded seven and a half minutes in when Gavin Killoran forced a turnover in his own zone, then raced ahead and jammed in a chance off an attempt sent to the target by teammate Owen Murphy.

The tally for Killoran was his 15th of the season as he also scored in a third-straight game for the Thunderbirds on their weekend road trip.

Sealing the victory on a late power play, some crisp puck movement saw Declan Gallivan take an Aiden Atkinson feed, then find Deven Jones-McDonald between the circles where he fired a low shot along the ice through the legs of McInnes to finalize the result.

The shutout for Boville was his second of the season and fourth overall for the club.

With the outcome, Thunderbirds improve to 22-12-2-2, while in defeat, the Gold Miners drop to 11-23-0-4.
