Thunderbirds Culina named Gongshow Gear player of the month
SUDBURY – The Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League announced Friday that Soo Thunderbirds goaltender Mario Culina has been named the Gongshow Gear Inc. player of the month for December.
In four starts during the final month of 2014, the 17-year-old Sault Ste. Marie product was victorious in each of them helping the Thunderbirds boast the best winning percentage in the NOJHL while also holding down a share of top spot overall in the league standings.
In his four December appearances Culina posted a goals-against average of 1.50 along with a .910 save percentage.
The Soo stopper also currently tops all NOJHL netminders in overall average at 1.95 and sports a .930 save mark while also leading the league in wins with 14.
Culina, who earlier this season, played for Team NOJHL at the Central Canada Cup Challenge in Toronto, has amassed a 13-1-1-0 record in his past 15 games played for the T-Birds.
For his efforts Culina will receive a prize pack courtesy of Gongshow Gear, the official lifestyle hockey apparel of the NOJHL.
Also receiving consideration for the Gongshow Gear player of the month was forwards Brady Clouthier (Abitibi Eskimos) Cody Gratton (Cochrane Crunch), Spencer MacLean (Elliot Lake Wildcats) Connor Thie (Kirkland Lake Gold Miners) and Steve Harland Powassan Voodoos).
