Thunderbirds double up Voodoos 4-2
SAULT STE. MARIE – A Caleb Boman goal with six and a half minutes to go proved to be the game-winner as the Soo Thunderbirds topped the Powassan Voodoos 4-2 Friday evening in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League play at John Rhodes Community Centre.
After a scoreless opening period the teams combined for five tallies in the middle session, including three by Sault Ste. Marie in the first-ever meeting between the two sides.
Michael Silveri gave the visitors the lead early in the second only to see Owen Headrick tie things up at 5:09.
Nathan Hebert then connected on the power play six minutes later to put the T-Birds on top for the first time.
Powassan levelled the proceedings at 13:07 courtesy of Brett Lepisto, but the home side answered right back thanks to Boman just 26 seconds later.
Jaren Bellini then added some insurance in the final frame as the Thunderbirds improved to 2-0 on the season while the Voodoos slipped to 1-3.
Brett Jeffries had a pair of assists for the winners as did Connor Dea.
Shots on goal favoured Powassan 34-29 with Brian Kment picking up the victory and Jack Ondrovic the loss.
