Thunderbirds edge Nickel Barons 2-1
SUDBURY – A Brett Jeffries goal midway through the contest proved to be the game-winner as the Soo Thunderbirds edged the Sudbury Nickel Barons 2-1 Wednesday evening in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League play at McClelland Arena.
Sudbury used special team to get out in front as Dylan Callaghan connected on the power play at 8:36 of the opening period.
Sault Ste. Marie responded with a man advantage marker of their own in the final minute of the stanza, courtesy of Matt Pinder with 57 seconds remaining.
Up a man halfway through the game, Jeffries supplied the difference maker beating Nickel Barons netminder Jessie Morin.
Thunderbirds goalkeeper Brian Kment shut the door the rest of the way as did Morin as neither side would add any more tallies.
Shots on goal favoured the T-Birds 36-31with Kment picking up the victory helping his side improve to 4-2.
With the loss Sudbury’s record slipped to 7-2-0-1.
NOJHL action resumes Friday on three fronts with a trio of 7:30 p.m. starts.
Kirkland Lake heads to Centennial Arena in Elliot Lake to tangle with the Wildcats, Cochrane is at home to Powassan while Abitibi meets Mattawa in a neutral site affair being held at the Archie Dillon Sports Complex in Timmins.
