Thunderbirds, NOJHL alumnus Miller shines at AHL Skills event
SUDBURY – Sunday evening was a big night for former Soo Thunderbirds and Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League alumnus Colin Miller at the American Hockey League All-Stars Skills Competition in Utica, N.Y.
Miller, currently a defenceman with the AHL’s Manchester Monarchs, won both the hardest shot contest Sunday, in record-setting form, and also captured top laurels in the fastest skater event helping his side win the overall competition.
His blast of 105.5 miles per hour was the hardest shot in the 20-year history of the AHL Skills Competition.
Miller also flew around the ice in 13.805 seconds to take home fastest skater laurels to cap off an amazing night for the second-year pro.
He will look to continue his impressive run as he suits up for Team East in the 2015 AHL All-Star game Monday evening back in Utica.
A 2012 draft pick of the NHL’s Los Angeles Kings, Miller currently leads all Manchester defencemen in offensive production with 29 points in 37 games on 10 goals and 19 assists.
Those numbers also rank him fifth overall among all AHL blueliners.
Miller spent the 2009-10 campaign with the Thunderbirds amassing 30 points from the point in 46 outings helping his hometown Sault Ste. Marie side win the league’s Western Division crown and advance all the way to the NOJHL finals where they fell in seven hard fought games to the Abitibi Eskimos.
