Thunderbirds remain unbeaten on home ice

SAULT STE. MARIE – The Soo Thunderbirds continue to roll on home ice.

The first place club in the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League won a team-record 14th in a row at home to start the season at the friendly confines of Essar Centre as they rolled over the Blind River Beavers 6-1 Thursday evening.

Anthony Miller and Anthony Butorac paced the Thunderbirds offensively with a goal and two assists apiece as they notched five unanswered goals to break open 1-1 tie in the second period.

The duo of Gavin Burbach and Joey Miller supplied two tallies apiece for Sault Ste. Marie in the victory.

After Burbach opened the scoring midway through the opening frame, Derek Battagin levelled the proceedings for Blind River with two minutes to go in the first.

It was all home side after that however as they connected three times in the middle stanza and twice more in the third to conclude the night’s scoring.

Shots on goal favoured the Sault 49-21 with Joel Horodziejczyk winning his 11th straight start in net as he lowered his league-leading goals-against average to 1.62. Matt Young suffered the loss for the Beavers.

The triumph was also the T-Birds 17th in succession at home dating back to last season as they raised their overall record to 22-4-0-2.

In defeat Blind River slipped to 5-22-0-1 on the campaign.

Game action in the NOJHL continues Friday at the Kirkland Lake Gold Miners host the Sudbury Nickel Barons in a 7:30 p.m. start at the Joe Mavrinac Community Complex.
