Thunderbirds skate to win over Nickel Barons
SAULT STE. MARIE – The Soo Thunderbirds rebounded from an early deficit to skate to a 6-2 victory over the Sudbury Nickel Barons Saturday in a Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League West Division affair at the John Rhodes Community Centre.
Sudbury got off to a quick start in this one as Ryan Mooney found the back of the net 67 seconds into the contest.
Answering back, the Thunderbirds countered with three markers to go up by a pair after one period of play.
Eric Hillock tied it for the T-Birds 7:18 while Sault Ste. Marie’s Nicolas Tassone and Jaren Bellini added later efforts to make it a 3-1 game.
The lone tally of the middle session was also scored by the Thunderbirds as Anthony supplied an unassisted effort at 11:43.
Sudbury used special teams to move closer in the third as August Jarecki connected on the power play midway through the stanza.
Sault Ste. Marie answered that getting goals 11 seconds apart thanks to Brett Jeffries and Nicolas Sicoly to round out the scoring.
Nathan Hebert dished out a pair of assists to aid the Thunderbirds offensively.
Brian Kment turned aside 21 of 23 shots fired his way to register the win.
Kevin Labelle started for the Nickel Barons and suffered the loss allowing three on 13 attempts.
Jessie Morin stopped 25 of 28 in 46 minutes of relief.
