Trappers surprise league-leading Thunderbirds
NORTH BAY – A Blake Peavey goal with 2:20 remaining proved to be the game-winner as the North Bay Trappers surprised the Soo Thunderbirds 3-2 Sunday evening in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League action at West Ferris Arena.
North Bay jumped out to a 2-0 lead after the first period of play courtesy of a pair of Eric Champagne markers 49 seconds apart.
Gavin Burbach pulled the Thunderbirds to within one beating Trappers starter Dustin Hummel at 18:16 of the middle stanza with his team-leading 16th goal of the season.
The score stayed that way until the late going of regulation Peavey buried the difference maker at 17:40 of the final stanza.
Newly acquired Darcy Haines scored with 40 seconds to bring Sault Ste. Marie to within one as last season’s NOJHL most valuable player connected in his initial game with the T-Birds since being acquired from the Pembroke Lumber Kings of the Central Canada Hockey League earlier in the week.
That turned out to be the final tally of the night however as North Bay held on for the victory.
Hummel finished with31 saves in the win helping the Trappers improve to 8-13-0-4.
Brian Kment faced 21 attempts in defeat for the Sault who dropped to 18-4-0-2 overall as the Thunderbirds have now gone winless in three straight marking the first time that has happened since November of 2010.
Next up in league play has the Kirkland Lake Gold Miners looking to extend their current five-game winning streak as they travel to Sudbury to take on the Nickel Barons in a 7:30 p.m. start at McClelland Arena.
