Trempner leads Express past Thunderbirds

After dropping a 3-2 overtime decision to the Soo Eagles back on Friday night in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, the Soo Thunderbirds were back in action on Sunday afternoon as they made a trip to Espanola to take on the Espanola Express.

Sunday afternoon’s game also marked the Thunderbirds final game of 2019.

Despite outshooting the Express 36-34, the Thunderbirds closed out the year 2019 with a loss on Sunday afternoon as they fell by a score of 6-4 to the Espanola Express at the Espanola Regional Recreation Complex.

Express forward Zach Trempner recorded his first NOJHL hat trick and four point game while assistant captain Lukas Lyszyk also had a big afternoon offensively, scoring a shorthanded goal and setting up two others.

Josh Boucher had a goal and an assist for the Express while captain Matias Salem also had a two point afternoon, setting up two goals.

Jackson Legro and Nelson Tucker both got on the scoresheet with one assist each for the Express.

Rylan Clemons, Avery Rebek, Kurtis Rogers and Tyler Savard had the goals for the Soo while Jake Kovacs, Dylan Parsons, Tristan Cicchello, Will Josephson, Nick Smith and Nolan Ford all had one assist each.

Thunderbirds goaltender Sam Evola gave up six goals on thirty four shots in the loss while Express netminder Carson Boutin made thirty two saves for the win.

The Thunderbirds will be back in action for their first game of 2020 on Friday, January 3rd for a rematch against the Espanola Express at 7:30 p.m. at the Espanola Regional Recreation Complex.
