Twenty Five Straight Home Wins For T-Birds

By Matt Stefano

After blanking the Soo Eagles 4-0 on Friday night in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, the Soo Thunderbirds returned to Essar Centre ice on Saturday to try and sweep the home and home series against the Eagles.

Matt Caruso led the way with a goal and an assist for the T-Birds as they defeated the Soo Eagles 4-1 on Saturday night.

“I thought it was a great game,” said Caruso. “We got off to a slow start but the boys battled back and we won the game.”

The T-Birds, who entered Saturday night’s contest with a perfect 24-0 home record, broke their team record with their twenty fifth straight home win, dating back to the 2013-2014 regular season when they won twenty four straight on home ice.

“It’s obviously a great accomplishment for our team,” continued the T-Birds top scorer. “But we’re not done here, we have a few games left and time to focus on the playoffs.”

Jaren Bellini, Aiden Salerno and Darian Pilon (power play) had the other goals for the T-Birds while Caleb Boman, Brett Jeffries and Izaak Del Mastro all recorded an assist each.

Alex DiBacco’s power play goal was the only tally for the Eagles with Chris Skinner and Mike Winn picking up the assists.

T-Birds goalie Connor Ryckman made fourteen saves for the win while Jack Hickey gave up four goals on sixty shots.

The T-Birds are back in action on Sunday afternoon, March 6th at 3:00 p.m. against the Espanola Express at the Essar Centre.
