Savard and Rebek lead Thunderbirds past Crunch

After opening up the NOJHL Showcase with an 8-3 victory over the Blind River Beavers at the Big Bear Arena in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan on Tuesday afternoon, the Soo Thunderbirds were back in action on Wednesday night for the second and final day of the NOJHL Showcase as they took on the Cochrane Crunch.

The Thunderbirds finished a perfect 2-0 at this year’s NOJHL Showcase as they defeated the Crunch by a score of 4-1 at the Big Bear Arena.

Soo Greyhounds prospect Tyler Savard had his second straight three point game on Wednesday night, scoring a pair of goals for the Thunderbirds, including one on the power play and adding an assist.

Thunderbirds second year forward Avery Rebek recorded his first career three point game, setting up three goals.

Forwards Daniel Bazarin and Nolan Ford (power play) had the other goals for the Soo while defencemen Tyler Dunbar and Warner Young had one assist each.

Stephen Minichiello had a power play goal for the Crunch with assists going to Owen Perala and Hunter Buzzi.

Crunch netminder Cody Levesque gave up 4 goals on 31 shots in the loss while Thunderbirds rookie goaltender Dakota Meyer made 29 saves for the victory.

With the win, the Thunderbirds have now improved their record to 6 wins, 7 losses, 1 overtime loss and 2 shootout losses, good for 15 points and have now hopped over the Soo Eagles for third place in the NOJHL’s West Division standings.

The Thunderbirds will now be back in action this Friday night for a rematch against the Cochrane Crunch at the Soo Peewee Arena.

Puck drop is 7:00 p.m.

NOTE

For Friday’s game against Cochrane, all Soo Peewee hockey players who wear their jerseys to the game, will receive free admission when accompanied by an adult.
