Soares lifts Gold Miners over Eskimos

IROQUOIS FALLS – A Luc Soares goal 2:17 into the third period proved to be the difference as the Kirkland Lake Gold Miners skated to a 3-2 road victory over the Abitibi Eskimos Tuesday night in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League action at Jus Jordan Arena.

After a scoreless opening 20 minutes the Gold Miners got on the board early in the second as Jeremy Dumont beat Eskimos starter Braddock Baalerud.

Christian Bortolussi made it 2-0 Kirkland Lake with just over six minutes to go in the middle session before Kezmin Madden pulled Abitibi to within one late in the frame.

Soares then notched the eventual game-winner in the third before Ryan Attwood brought the home side back to within one with 3:35 remaining in what turned out to be the final tally of the evening.

Tyler Romain chipped in with a pair of assists to aid the offensive cause for the Miners.

Kenny Fitzgerald made 23 stops to record the win in net for Kirkland Lake, who improved to 5-1 with the triumph.

Baalerud had 32 saves in defeat for the Eskimos as they fell to 3-2-0-1 on the season.

Abitibi returns to the ice Wednesday as they head to Greater Sudbury to take on the 6-1 Nickel Barons in a 7:30 p.m. start at McClelland Arena in Copper Cliff.
