Thunderbirds win streak reaches 17 games

ESPANOLA – Make it 17 wins and counting for the Soo Thunderbirds.

The latest triumph for the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League front-runners came Saturday afternoon at the NOJHL Showcase in Espanola as they skated past the Abitibi Eskimos 4-2.

Abitibi used the power play to take the lead after one period as Brennen Roy connected during a man advantage midway through the session.

Sault Ste. Marie responded in the middle frame on tallies by Jaren Bellini and Brett Jeffries to take a 2-1 lead only to see Roy pot his second of the contest to level the proceedings after 40 minutes.

Eric Hillock, last nights’ overtime hero in a 2-1 victory over second place Kirkland Lake, notched his second consecutive game-winner with a man advantage 1:53 into the third to put the T-Birds in front for good.

Captain Gavin Burbach then iced it with an unassisted effort with 12 minutes to go to round out the scoring.

Brian Kment picked up the win in net for the Sault while Sylvain Miron suffered the loss.

The Showcase concludes this evening at 7:15 p.m. when the Sudbury Nickel Barons take on the North Bay Trappers at the Regional Recreation Complex.
