Lucky seven for T-Birds & Gordon

By Matt Stefano

After earning honourable mention in this week’s CJHL top 20 weekly rankings, the Soo Thunderbirds were looking to extend their winning streak to seven games for the first time this season as they were in Blind River on Wednesday night to take on the Beavers.

Zach Senecal’s first career overtime goal on the power play just 1:50 into the second overtime period from Jake Behse and Keegan Stevenson gave the Soo a 1-0 win over the Blind River Beavers on Wednesday night at the Blind River Community Centre.

The last time the T-Birds skated 0-0 after regulation time was back on November 10th, 2007, when they ended up losing 1-0 in a shootout against the Blind River Beavers at Blind River Community Centre.

Wednesday, December 7th, 2016, marked a lucky seven night for a couple of reasons.

Not only did the T-Birds extend their winning streak to seven straight games, but goaltender Brandon Gordon, who turned aside thirty shots on Wednesday night, picked up his seventh career shutout, which now tied Frank Novello (1999-2001) for most career shutouts by a Soo Thunderbird goaltender.

Beavers goaltender Myles Hektor gave up one goal on thirty eight shots for the loss.

The T-Birds will be in Elliot Lake on Sunday, December 11th to take on the Wildcats at 7:00 p.m. from Centennial Arena.
