One of the Fellinger brothers is on the move.
The Soo Thunderbirds have announced on Friday that they have made their first trade of the offseason, as they have traded defenceman Austin Fellinger to the CCHL’s Renfrew Wolves in exchange for a player development fee.
“I’m excited to be heading down to Renfrew next season, because I’ve heard many great things about the team and the league they play in,” Fellinger said. “I’m willing to put the time and work to embrace this opportunity for growth and new experiences.”
This past season with the T-Birds, Fellinger scored 5 times and led all T-Bird blueliners in assists with 27.
Before making the T-Birds as a full-time member this past season, Fellinger also played two games (Including one in the playoffs) as an affiliate player with the T-Birds back in 2021-2022.
“My time with the T-Birds was a thrilling and rewarding experience,” Fellinger said. “I created bonds and memories with my teammates that will never be forgotten and the coaching staff was also supportive and were dedicated to helping us improve our skills.”
Starting next season in Renfrew, Fellinger will be coached under former Soo Thunderbirds forward Ryan Leonard, who serves as head coach and general manager of the Renfrew Wolves.
“Austin has been a tremendous young man who comes from a good family and while we’re going to miss him, we’re still excited for him to have this new opportunity with a program such as Renfrew,” said Soo Thunderbirds assistant coach and general manager Jamie Henderson.
