Soo skates past Blind River

SAULT STE. MARIE – Nicolas Sicoly had a goal and two assists to help propel the Soo Thunderbirds past the Blind River Beavers 6-1 Tuesday night in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League action at the John Rhodes Community Centre.

Sault Ste. Marie, which lost just once on home ice during regular season in 2013-14, but had already dropped two of their first four at John Rhodes early in the campaign, got back to their winning ways by jumping out to a 4-0 lead after one period of play in this one.

Nicolas Tassone put the T-Birds up at 3:51 and they extended their lead just over a minute later courtesy of Matt Pinder.

Later tallies by Anthony Miller and Jaren Bellini put the Soo in control heading into the second stanza.

It was a tight-checking middle frame that saw neither side find the back of the net keeping the contest at 4-0 entering the third period.

After Sicoly made it 5-0 six and a half minutes into the final frame, Blind River dashed Mario Culina’s shutout bid with 8:52 to go on a Chris Corgan effort.

Chris Boman then iced it for the home side with a power play marker at 16:38 to wrap-up the night’s scoring.

Mario Culina handled 26 or 27 shots he faced to pick-up the win helping his side improve to 3-2.

Nick Kazmierczak saw 32 attempts put his way in defeat as the Beavers fell to 0-8.

The Thunderbirds get right back to game action Wednesday as they travel to Greater Sudbury to tangle with the 7-1-0-1 Sudbury Nickel Barons in a 7:30 p.m. start at McClelland Arena in Copper Cliff.
