Thunderbirds rally to extend win streak to 15
SUDBURY – Gavin Burbach tallied twice, including the game-winner, while Owen Headrick dished out three assists as the Soo Thunderbirds rallied from an early two-goal deficit to defeat the North Bay Trappers 4-2 Sunday in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League play at the East Ferris Community Centre.
With the triumph the Thunderbirds ran a consecutive game win streak reach 15 as they have not tasted defeat since a 3-2 loss in North Bay back on Nov. 10.
After the Trappers grabbed a 2-0 lead after 20 minutes on goals by Kyle Baril and Chance Thomas the first place Sault Ste. Marie began their comeback in the middle session notching power play markers by Darcy Haines and Joey Miller to level the proceedings after two periods of play.
The Thunderbirds then completed their rally in the final frame with Burbach striking twice as he finished off feeds from Headrick.
Brian Kment made 28 saves to register the victory for the T-Birds who improved to 33-4-0-2 overall.
Evan Cormier suffered the setback for North Bay as they slipped to 12-20-0-5 on the season.
NOJHL action resumes Tuesday as the Abitibi Eskimos host the Kirkland Lake Gold Miners in a 7:30 p.m. start at Jus Jordan Arena.
