MASSEY, Ont. – The Soo Thunderbirds broke out with eight second period goals on their way to a convincing 11-1 win over the Elliot Lake Vikings at the Massey & District Arena in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League play Sunday afternoon.
Easton Hall and Kelsey Ouellet had two goals each in the road win for the Thunderbirds.
Near the 15-minute mark of the opening frame, the Thunderbirds opened the scoring as Callum McCauley scored his 14th beating Vikings goalie Sam Keene for a 1-0 lead.
In the second period, the Thunderbirds added on, as Easton Hall blasted a shot through traffic that went by Keene for a 2-0 Thundbirds advantage at 3:34 of the second period.
Kolby Fellinger got into the scoring action as his one-time shot from the right faceoff circle beat Keene to make it 3-0 at 4:15.
The Thunderbirds continued to fly offensively as defenceman Quinn Myles shot coming down the left wing went over the blocker side of Keene for a 4-0 lead at 11:41.
Then it was Thomas DeGagne with a shorthanded marker on a nice breakaway pass from Harley Wardell and he went in all alone and beat Keene glove side for the 5-0 lead at 13:32.
Still shorthanded, Kelsey Ouellet was sprung on another breakaway and his quick shot found its way by Keene as the TBirds took a 6-0 advantage at 13:48.
That 6th goal ended the night for Vikings starter Keene as he was replaced by Braydon Garnhart.
However, that did not stop the Thunderbirds offensive onslaught as Samuel Lake put away his 16th just over a minute after the goalie change.
Ouellet continued to pile on as he scored less than two minutes after the Lake goal which made it 8-0.
Easton Hall, who got the second period scoring started, made it 9-0 at 18:19.
Midway through the third, Anthony Bertrand scored his 7th to break the Maverick Fletcher shutout bid at 10:39 to make it 9-1.
The Thunderbirds hit double digits when former Elliot Lake Red Wings forward Silas Crawford converted for his first of the season for the 10-1 lead at 12:56 of the third.
Kaden Dundas added a power play marker in the final minute to put an end to the high-scoring affair in Massey.
With the one-sided victory the Thunderbirds improve to 33-13-4-1 while the Vikings move to 5-42-1-4
